Gurung: Caught in ‘power tussle’?

New Delhi, Feb. 8: The Centre hopes to ink an accord with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha at the next tripartite talks on Gorkhaland, the date of which will be announced after a meeting on Wednesday.

The Centre and the Bengal government have offered to enhance the powers of the DGHC. After the third round of talks in August 2009, it was agreed that the DGHC Act of 1988 would be repealed provided the Morcha and the state proposed an alternative set-up.

The governments may even agree to replace the DGHC by a body with more area under its administration and increased executive/legislative powers. The date for the fifth round of tripartite talks will be announced after consultations at the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on February 10.

Home ministry sources today hinted that an agreement with the Morcha may be reached at the fifth round of talks. “If not for the Telangana issue, home secretary G.K. Pillai could have returned from Darjeeling with an agreement after the fourth round itself,” said a ministry official. Trouble in Andhra Pradesh had made the Centre cautious about its engagement with the Morcha then.

Sources also confirmed that the Centre had been in constant touch with the Morcha leadership, particularly party president Bimal Gurung.

The Morcha had demanded the fifth round of talks within 45 days of the fourth round held on December 21. Sources in the home ministry said, after the deadlines expired on February 6-7, a message was sent to the Morcha to postpone the agitation citing the cabinet committee meeting on February 10.

“We understand Gurung’s anxiety. Other GJM (Morcha) leaders are breathing down his neck. There is power tussle there,” said an official.

“A separate Gorkha state is out of the question. None of the three political parties in West Bengal — the CPM, Congress and the Trinamul Congress — are in favour of a separate Gorkha state. How will the resolution be passed in the Assembly,” said the official.

On Sunday, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told a chief ministers’ conference in Delhi that the state government had not accepted the demand for Gorkhaland but was willing to enhance the DGHC’s powers.

“The agitation has been peaceful in the hills but every attempt by the Morcha to spread out to the plains has given rise to ethnic clashes,” said Bengal chief minister Bhattacharjee.

  • image Still like the idea of a “current” ..... "SPECIAL INTERIM ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE OF DARJEELING & DOOARS" - which to me is still the “best idea” I have heard of - plus we can keep up the "GORKHALAND" issue alive till our "Indian Union Statehood" is finally achieved after the "WB Assembly Elections" are finally over ... and we can support whoever will grant us "Statehood" Mamata or Buddadeb ... and the “All Indian Conscience” is finally clear to “act properly” for INDIA is still “so” stuck with the political “OSTRICH SYNDROME” (head stuck in the mud syndrome) ...... and most importantly ... First & Foremost … Let “PEACE FOR ALL” prevail in the hills and Siliguri and Dooars .... xxx's all, Lazy Daisy ;)

  • image There are many things our leaders need to understand, firing the "Gorkhaland Gun" by keeping it on student's shoulders wont do any good. Its high time our leaders take thier responsibility seriously. gone are the days when we sung our glory songs.time to make a new identity. Mr Bimal Gurung must understand making a promise of shooting himself if Gorkhaland is not given, was a mockery. He better needs to go for a hungerstrike, that will prove his leadership not the same old "BHASANS".The people in hills must fight for themselves. Its not the leaders struggle its ours. let Mr gurung speak the public words not a political sentence. NOTHING LESS THEN GORKHALAND. JAI GORKHA JAI GORKHALAND.

  • image Mr Bimal Gurung with the kind of things going on around i believe nothing would be fruit ful. the relay hungerstrike that has been hapening since long time "do you think that its helping the cause by any chance?" i understand politics and dont want to also however If you are really fighting for the Land then every one will appreciate if you lead from the front. i think its time for you go on a hunger strike now. so many people died, so many lost their chindren, many lost their parents and many lost their near and dear ones but what hapened "nothing" this time around if you backup then people will not have any more strength to fight next time, go on a national tour and you'll see how the Gorkhas are struggling and what respect we have. On every 15'th August when ever the chief guest gives speech they proudly say " Hitler once said ig i had the Gokha regiment i would have rulled the world.... Netaji once Said if India is to get independence then it would be through the Gorkhas" please lets dont live on those fantasy world. the world has changed now and you need to understand. Hitler and Netaji are already dead so lets dont be happy with wat they said, lets get into business of making our dreams come true. "The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.” so please have a clear vision of what you want and start working towards it before its too late because when people can chase Subash Ghising, dawa Pakhrin then they can certainly chase other people also.
