ONLY TIME WILL TELL
By Riddhi Tamang

With the date of the TRUST VOTE just a day away and the UPA governments’ fate hanging in uncertainty ONLY TIME WILL TELL what is in store for the Government and the people of the hills. The balance of votes is so delicately poised that one vote could topple the Government. At such a juncture the GJMM had rightfully asked Mr. Norbula to abstain from voting for the UPA unless they would take up the GORKHALAND issue.

It seems Mr. Norbula met Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on the 19th and put forward the grievances and demands of the hills in connection to him voting for the UPA. The way he has put it across to the Congress leadership is vital. Rather than just a plea I hope he put it across to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi that the people of the hills want him to abstain from voting for the UPA unless the party leadership decides to take up the GORKHALAND issue. However Mr. Norbula CLAIMS that Mrs. Gandhi has assured to arrange a tripartite meeting soon to solve the GORKHALAND issue, though there has been no coverage or mention of it in any of the National networks or dailys.

I don’t mean to be skeptical here but I just hope it doesn’t turnout to be the story of the donkey and the carrot. The donkey being us, the carrot being the GORKHALAND issue and the man riding the donkey being the Congress party. I do hope the Congress isn’t dangling the carrot in front of the donkey to make the donkey walk and cross the line [the magical figure of 271 in the Trust Vote]. I do hope it isn’t just lip service on the part of the Congress leadership, ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

What if the UPA government fails to get the required 271 votes and is toppled in the centre, then there is bound to be early elections. In which case the GJMM should put a candidate of their own in the parliament and play the game of wait and watch. The GJMM must not commit themselves to any party before hand but move with the flow and like astute politicians support the party that forms the Government in the centre.

For the sake of the Congress party, the people of the hills, the GORKHALAND issue and Mr. Norbulas authenticity and genuineness I do hope the UPA government wins the TRUST VOTE and Mrs. Gandhi lives upto her assurances and takes up the GORKHALAND issue seriously. We shall wait and see for ONLY TIME WILL TELL
