Poll: 4th Tripartite Meeting
During the 4th Tripartite Talk, GJMM has been immensely pressurized to focus only on the creation of Gorkhaland, besides, the conclusion of the Meeting seems to be only TALK on POLITICAL LEVEL in next round. Do you think 4th Tripartite Talk has been successful?

SAVE TEESTA SAVE OUR FUTURE

Darjeeling which was once considered to be the Oxford of East by Western academics, where the Kings of many nations studied, where Mother Teresa got her inspiration...... has now turned out to be the place where the people are so ignorant that they do not even know what’s happening around them.... Where outer appearance is more important than knowledge and skills.... a place which inspired Mark twain to write `a land of such beauty and grace, that any one who once beholds this site will not exchange it for anything in this world`.... How did we go on to become so ignorant is anyones guess.... But even in our ignorance let’s not be irresponsible....let’s not forget that whatever we are today is the result of past mistakes..... and if we do not change ourselves then our future generations will be as ignorant and as stupid as we are.

Please pay attention to whats happening around U.... do U know that NHPC is building 22 dams across River TEESTA and Rungeet??? Do U know that they plan to produce 12000MW of electricity per annum, where as whole of North-east India requires only 5000MW electricity per annum..... Did U know that Darjeeling and nearby areas are not going to get even a single unit of electricity that will be produced????? Do U know that The so called Low-Dams are infact, very high????? Do U know that the cascading effect of dams (i.e. if one dam breaks at the top there will be increased flow of water to the next one and the one after and so on an so forth) will wipe out the road connecting SIKKIM, KALIMPONG, Darjeeling etc forever???? Do u know that not only the road will cease to exist many towns and villages in the vicinity of Teesta and Rungeet will be wiped out???? Do U know that the maximum operational life of such dams are only 25 years, after which they will stop to function because of siltation and blocking or doorways??? Do U know that for producing electricity for 25 years to be sold and supplied to big corporations and nearing countries, we and our place/land are being placed as sacrificial lambs....????? Do U know that the Lapchu-Peshok councilor Bhanu Lama with his group of Cronies threatened those whose raised their voices against the NHPC authorities?????.... Do U know the number of people who have died while constructing the dam....????? Do U know how much money DGHC or local bodies will earn as revenue because of this project?????.... Do U know how many people who are contractors with NHPC have sold their souls for money....????? DO U KNOW????? IF NOT ITS NOT TOO LATE....... ASK QUESTIONS ITS YOUR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT PROTECTED BY THE CONSTITUTION TO THE DM, DGHC authorities...STATE GOVT..... CENTRAL GOVT..... find out whats happening ..... MAKE YOUR MOTTO - `I WILL BE INFORMED`... its not only your right but your duty too, as a responsible citizen in a democratic setup, U tend to do more harm than good by keeping mumm.... SPEAK OUT ITS YOUR RIGHT......

  • image Dear sir, Who is responsible for the difficulties faced by the people of Sikkim and Kalimpong, when the road was blocked in the NH31A. The central is not takng care, neither the State Government, and leave aside the DGHC,they are of no use.Either they are with the State Govt,or they have no power. Don`t play poliitcs with the life of the common people, because there may be the children of the leader too .

  • image I read Mr.Upendra's comments and would like to add some more of my own. The number of dams being being built on the Teesta and Rangeet is commencing from near Chungthang in North Sikkim. Some people of Dzongu have been protesting in Gangtok since quite sometime. In fact a study was undertaken by Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Studies of Mountain & Hill Environment, University of Delhi which had been commissioned by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt.of India and sponsored by N.H.P.C.Ltd. The study has gone in depth into all aspects such as effect on the land, effect on flora and fauna, loss of land of the poor indigenous people, disturbance in the demographic position due to influx of outsiders, effect on the health of the local population etc. Infact, construction of mega projects is always fraught with the danger of causing severe ecological damage. Even the Three Gorges dam in China has been criticised for the same reasons. But in most cases the governments choose to steam roller the voices of concern. One thing quite certain is that many of the indigenous species of fish in the Teesta and Rangeet will become extinct. Another piece of information is that in some of the villages, local springs have reportedly dried up as a result of tunnelling inside the hills.

  • image dear mr upendra, right at this moment darjeeling needs people like you who can make them aware of these facts. the gradual deterioration of the darjeeling hills due to ugly politicas and ignorance is extremely painful. though i am not fortunate enough like you to ba a people of the hills, yet my dedication and love towards Darjeeling and its people are no less.we must take up awareness programmes to educate the people of the hills in the right manner. i enjoy your articles (though with pain) and will be grateful if my suggestions are granted.

  • image * mr upendra, you are absolutely right with ur studies about people of darjeeling how ignorant and stupid they have become, god forgive those people who fight war with weapon or pen....but god does'nt forgive those people who just wait in there bed, with there cup of tea thinking what is going to happen in there neighbourhood is not there problem.....how vague configuration has become my local people...water crisis, wait for the rain when it rain and we are dependable on that same old singchal lake which was nothing more then a gift left by the britishers.but people of dareeling most of them are 95% literate are being so pathetic towards our land, people and the environment which in yester years so proud to called people from darjeeling.me myself,i am a native darjeelians{ghooms}.our literates people are ruled but so unrully rude and tyrrant leader who is taking all the benefits for our people being much more mutilated and stupid and ignorance......what our leader has done during the whole crisis of water for the people of dareeling he is just attending the ceremony in the village telling about how the people should be celebrating the pujas and must be intact with there traditional values. no one will come from the heavenly earth to solve our problem,no holly spirits.why people don't act themself.......mr upendra what ever u have wrote in ur column.with all the aftermath of construction of dam in river teesta.it is just mere singing a song to a deaf and dumb people.people who does'nt care about what there social infra-struture .....simple words is that our people have adopted a 2 letter words WHO CARES?
