Poll: 4th Tripartite Meeting
During the 4th Tripartite Talk, GJMM has been immensely pressurized to focus only on the creation of Gorkhaland, besides, the conclusion of the Meeting seems to be only TALK on POLITICAL LEVEL in next round. Do you think 4th Tripartite Talk has been successful?

Morcha takes over Darjeeling municipality

By DT Correspondent on April 02,2008

Darjeeling, April 2: The much awaited election to the post of Chairmanship of Darjeeling Municipality, which had been vacant since the death of former Chairman, Late B B Dewan, was held today under the supervision of government appointed election observer, Mrs Pranita Pariyar, Magistrate, Darjeeling Sub Division. Mr. Pemba Tshering Bhutia, the Gorkha Jana Mukhti Morcha (GJMM) councillor of Ghoom Samisty (Ward No 2) has been elected as the new Chairman of the 32 member strong Darjeeling Municipality. While the councillors of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) deliberately abstained from voting, the required quorum was still met with 16 councillors of GJMM unanimously electing Mr. Bhutia for the top post. In an hour long meeting held at the Conference Hall, Darjeeling Municipality, which was presided over by Mr. Amar Lama, the councillors of the GJMM unequivocally elected Mr. Bhutia as the new Chairman, much to the expectation of the political analysts’ who view it as the final blow to the shattering GNLF which has already lost the Kurseong Municipality to Morcha, a month ago.  Minutes after being elected the Chairman, Mr. Bhutia rushed to the GJMM, Central Committee office at Singamari, where the Party supremo Mr Bimal Gurung greeted him with ‘khada’ and bouquet.

Later in the afternoon, Mrs. Sumitra Dey, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, administered the oath to Mr. Bhutia in the Capital Hall, which was thronged by hundreds of enthusiast GJMM members and supporters. Those who attended the oath taking ceremony included Mr. and Mrs Pema Tshering Bhutia, the ex councillor (Ward No 1) and father of Mr. Bhutia, Mr. Roshan Giri, General Secretary (GJMM, Central Committee), Dinesh Gurung, President (GJMM, Town Committee), the members of the executive body (Darjeeling Municipality) and the leaders of the GJMM. Addressing the gathering, the visibly jubilant Mr. Bhutia thanked the people and vowed to work for the over all development of the municipality area.  While the present governing body has already completed four of its five years tenure in the office, Mr. Bhutia stressed the need to make Darjeeling Municipality “corruption free” to regain the lost glory that the “Queen of Hills” once had. In his speech, Mr. Bhutia also pointed to the formation of new Ward Committees to take cognizance of people’s grievances and to monitor the developmental work in various wards. In an exclusive interview to DT, Mr. Bhutia held that the “cleanliness and beautification” of the municipality area ranked highest in his agendum, besides solving water crisis in the area. When reminded that the Gorkhaland issue was conspicuously missing in his addressal speech, Mr. Bhutia was quick to add, “Gorkhaland remains the crux of GJMM and that the party would stick to it”. The new Chairman – in – Council, the executive body to assist the Chairman would be formed on 3rd April.

  • image Our Nepali people will never ever learn ... I thought that maybe this time it would be the fight for a winning cause about the upliftment of our own nepali society and its members as such .... but no ..... politics reign supreme. Ola and his family have had their share of glory and power and money !!! It was now time for one of our own nepali brethen to command honest and sincere power at the Darjeeling municipality. Is there not even a single educated nepali who could have held this post ??? I guess not !!! Looking at the scenerio of the past few days ... I am being a little skeptical about this whole thing !!! I really wonder when peace will prevail in Darjeeling, when law and order would govern its citizens, when uplifting education and good convincing health facilities will be available to all, when water would flow in the taps in all the houses, when beautification projects would be taken in town, when an organised centralised vehicle terminal would be functioning, when drugs and prostitution would be dealt with a heavy hand, when there would be jobs for all ( ofcourse if people want to work !!! that is ...many of our people also dont want to work !!! ) If a place can go to the dogs ..... it is Darjeeling !!! It has already gone to the dogs !!! It is dirty, like one big slum, congested, full of traffic pollution, ofcourse no water, almost all the drains clogged and blocked, pathetic dirty looking buildings with no sense of architecture whatsoever, full of intimidating rowdy characters, no freedom of speech, overflowing with immigrants and non nepalis who have no regard for the place and its people. Yes it has indeed gone to the dogs !!! Nothing and no one can ever bring back its sanity !!

  • image Way to go... finally some educated people coming to the forefront. Hopefully things will get better and all the illegal landgrabbing will come to a standstill.. What a change from the time of the GNLF when landpapers "mysteriously" burnt down along with the old municipality office burning down...which was the start of rampant land grabbing and construction in the hills... Mr Bimal Gurung and Mr Ola ..- if you are reading this ... can we get the beauty of the hills back without housses sprouting on toilets, on drains.... and all over the hills !!!!
