Telangana instigates fresh agitation in Darjeeling hills

Darjeeling, Dec. 10: New twist in the Gorkhaland agitation is clearly indicated after the announcement for the process of separate state of Telangana.  The inquisitive people of Darjeeling hills are now more anxious than never. Political activities are already visible in this evening in Darjeeling town with the candle procession. GJMM president Bimal Gurung has already announced series of program in this afternoon and also urged people to support for last Gorkhaland battle steered by the GJMM.

Indefinite hunger strike will be launched in all three subdivisions, Siliguri and Dooars from tomorrow. All Morcha Associates including Ex-army, GLP will be participating in hunger strike. Huge procession is expected tomorrow in all three subdivisions by Youths and Students wings of Morcha. GJMM has called Darjeeling hills shut down for four days starting from Dec. 14 to Dec. 17.

GJMM delegation headed by Roshan Giri is already on their way to Delhi, they are scheduled to meet with Sonia Gandhi and opposition leaders of the Country to push the Gorkhaland demand in the Centre along with the Telangana. Now, GJM to start indefinite fast for Gorkhaland state
The Times of India

SILIGURI (West Bengal): The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) announced an indefinite hunger strike for a separate Gorkhaland state Thursday, a day after the central government conceded the demand for Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh.)

The hunger strike for a Gorkhaland state to be carved out of some northern parts of West Bengal would be held in Darjeeling district's three hill subdivisions and the plains of Siliguri.

"Twenty-one youth activists will be on indefinite hunger strike in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong and Siliguri till we get Gorkhaland," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said.

Giri also announced a four-day shutdown in the area Dec 14-17.

Besides, the GJM activists will take out massive rallies in the hills from Thursday, he said. Home minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday night gave the green signal for a separate Telangana state, following widespread protests in Andhra Pradesh and the deteriorating health condition of Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao who had been on a fast-unto-death for 11 days.

GJM: Give us statehood
TimesNow

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) ups the ante on demand for a separate statehood. The workers are to embark on a 96-hour 'fast unto death'.

Stating that the GJM would not budge from its demand of Gorkhaland in the next tripartite talks, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri on December 6 said that creation of a separate state only would solve the problem in the Darjeeling Hills.

Asked whether the tripartite talks on the issue scheduled to be held on December 21 in Darjeeling would bear any fruit, he said "our one and only demand is Gorkhaland and unless that demand is met, no talks will be fruitful."

"It is not just a problem of Gorkhas of Darjeeling and Dooars, it is an issue for all Gorkhas throughout India," he said.

"We want a new state for the sake of our identity. So many years we have been part of Bengal, but have got nothing," the GJM general secretary said.

Claiming that the proposal to grant special status under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution had been opposed by Gorkha youths and that had given rise to the GJM, Giri said no other solution would be welcome.

Though Subhas Ghising's Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) had agreed to the special status proposal, the process was scuttled by violent protests in the hills.

The agitation finally led to the political decimation of Ghising, once a hero who had started the Gorkhaland movement in 1986 demanding statehood but had settled for the Gorkha Hill Council for the three sub-divisions Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.

BJP renews demand for Gorkhaland statehood
PTI News

Ranchi,Dec 10 (PTI) The BJP today threw its weight behind the demand for a separate 'Gorkhaland' in Darjeeling, saying the region lies along the border and a separate statehood would help "prevent infiltration and protect the border better".

The comments came in the wake of the Centre's move to grant statehood to Telangana bifurcating Andhra Pradesh.

"The BJP has always favoured small states. We also demand a separate statehood for Gorkhaland along with Telangana," BJP national spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here.

The statehood for Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chhatisgarh were granted on BJP's initiation, Rudy claimed, adding it a "important "to carve out Gorkhaland from West Bengal.

"Gorkhaland shares borders with other countries and a statehood to it would help it to prevent infiltration and protect the shape of our borders better," Rudy argued.

Telangana chaos, demands for more new states
PTI News

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) Gorkhaland supporters called for a bandh in Darjeeling for their own state while RLD leader Ajit Singh threatened to resume the agitation for a separate Harit Pradesh, as the planned statehood for Telangana sparked fresh demands today to create new states.

With the Centre agreeing to carve out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, it is expected to be tested in the backof demands for at least seven other new states besides Gorkhaland in West Bengal and Harit Pradesh or Kisan Pradesh to be carved out from western UP. Telangana will be the 29th state in the Indian Union as and when it is created.

There have been muted calls for creating Mithilanchal in Bihar, Coorg in Karnataka and Saurashtra in Gujarat.
