GJMM celebrates its first anniversary
DT Correspondent

DARJEELING 7TH October: Today GJM celebrated a full year of successful campaign for Gorkhaland. The party on this very day last year was named officially as above and its new flag unfurled. The celebration was marked by speeches by the various portfolio holders of the party and several cultural shows. Beginning today as part of the separate state movement was also the wearing of the respective cultural attires by one and all. This has been the talk of the town from the time this ‘appeal’ was made by the party. The party was not disappointed today as almost all present in Chowrasta had their attires on, be it the ‘daura suruwal’, ‘chowbandi’, ‘kurtas’ or at the least a ‘nepali topi’. Darjeeling this way looked totally different and so the beginning of Dasain was something like no one had ever seen before. This gives Dasain, Darjeeling and its denizens a distinct cultural flavour. The party chief Bimal Gurung was very much an integral part of the celebration as he appealed to the people concerning the dress code to support him, the party and the cause as it was a very small but important sacrifice that the people were asked to make. He proposed that there will come a time where people will be asked to make stronger sacrifices for the movement. Later in the programme Mrs.Gurung also present, felicitated many on the occasion. Both of them were dressed in the traditional daura suruwal and chowbandi respectively.

People seemed to be happy about this metamorphosis which they feel has given a distinct and renewed identity. “I quite enjoy wearing it, coz its once in a life time opportunity for me” said an elated young college youth. Another middle - aged gentleman proudly expressed “I wear this attire not out of force or out of choice but out of respect for my culture. I shall wear it till I die”. Some not at all bothered about identity or such high ideas discovered that a ‘daura suruwal’ especially the ‘suruwal’ was not warm enough and handling a ‘fariya’ is not as easy as it seems. Others were too excited wearing theirs for the first time. Unlike all the ones who were just happy or excited there were some who felt that wearing it by compulsion had lessened the excitement. Downtown in the afternoon lacked the usual ‘Dasain’ crowd as a large number of people preferred to stay indoors to avoid wearing. As of now, no types of picketing for the dress code have been reported in the Darjeeling Hills.

Only the following weeks will show how seriously the dress code implementation has been taken.oct7bimalg_400

Delete ‘Bengal’: Morcha to hills
- Signboards to be replaced with ‘Gorkhaland’ from Oct. 17 OUR BUREAU - The Telegraph

Darjeeling, Oct. 7: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today announced that all government signboards which had “West Bengal” written on them would be replaced by “Gorkhaland” from October 17 as part of the party’s non-cooperation movement for a separate state.

Morcha president Bimal Gurung while addressing a public meeting to celebrate the first anniversary of the party’s foundation day at Chowrastha said: “We will change all signboards of government offices where ‘West Bengal’ is written to ‘Gorkhaland’ from October 17 onwards. This is part of the non-cooperation movement which will get stronger once the festivities are over.”

Dressed in a cream duara sural, the traditional dress of the Gorkhas, Gurung said his party would not “force” any resident of the hills to take part in the cultural movement.

All hill communities had been asked to wear their traditional attires for a month, starting today.

”I had only made an appeal, not forced anybody. People say they are ready to sacrifice their lives for Gorkhaland but I only wanted them to wear daura sural or the traditional dresses of their respective communities. We will not try to enforce this cultural movement, but at the same time those who do not take part in it, will be considered as opposing the demand for Gorkhaland,” said Gurung.

In Darjeeling, almost all residents, including members of minority communities like Kashmiris, Bengalis, Biharis, Marwaris and Tibetans were dressed in their traditional attires. Around 40km away in Kurseong, many people said they could not wear traditional dresses because the tailors could not deliver on time.

“Like me, many people will wear the dress, once the tailors finish them,” said Raju Pradhan a resident of the hill town. At the foundation day celebration programme held in town, the Morcha felicitated Rev. Father Abraham for his contribution to social work. He was given Rs 10,000 and a replica of the khukuri. The Morcha flag was hoisted at 11.19am, as had been scheduled all over the hills.

Back in Darjeeling, the Morcha president urged people to pay electricity bills for the next three months. “Even Gandhi had softened his movement at times. However, I have told the chief minister that we will not pay the outstanding dues till September. We will pay the electricity bills only for the next three months. After that we will review this relaxation.”

The Morcha call for non-payment of power bills was enforced in April and from then on the government had incurred a loss of Rs 9.3 crore, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had said. “If people clear their dues it is their personal issue. We have told the state that there is no way we will ask the people to pay the dues.”

The Morcha also wants all vehicles to start sporting “GL” number plates from today onwards. Private vehicles in the hills had started using the “new” number plates from the first week of August.

Gurung also clarified that the party had not stopped Opposition outfits from holding public meetings. “We only want to say you must first garner public support. If the people are not happy with the meeting, we will not be responsible for their reaction.”

The Morcha president said Gorkhaland would be a reality by 2010. “Irrespective of what other political parties say, I will never compromise on the statehood demand.”

The Gorkhland Personnel, a voluntary cell of the party, took part in a march past today and are expected to be “posted” across the hills from tomorrow to help out tourists.

Signboards to flaunt ‘Gorkhaland’ from 17 Oct
Statesman News Service

DARJEELING, Oct. 7: The GJMM, on its foundation day today, issued another diktat publicly. It requires all signboards to have ‘Gorkhaland’ written on those instead of ‘West Bengal’ on and from 17 October. “It is our non-cooperation movement. We differ with West Bengal in all aspects and this should be implemented in areas within Gorkhaland territory,” said party president Mr Bimal Gurung. This forms a part of the milder programmes of the GJMM for the festive season to encourage tourism in Darjeeling. “We shall intensify the agitation after the pujas. As tourists are here now, we should enjoy and entertain them with cultural programmes,” Mr Gurung said.

Incidentally, by the GJMM's previous declaration, GL plates are compulsory for every vehicle coming from plains to the Hills from today. On more rigid lines, Mr Gurung said he would set his womens' wing after those who disobeyed. “The Nari Morcha will strictly supervise GL plate implementation. No vehicle will sport WB plates in the hills from today,” he said.

As the day also coincided with the GJMM''s dress code diktat, Mr Gurung and his fellow leaders dressed in the traditional attire of ‘daura suruwal’to grace the foundation day ceremony. The GLP activists and ex-armymen presented a guard of honour to the GJMM president after the flag hoisting ceremony at 11:19 a.m. After inspecting the GLP platoon, the leader waved benevolently at his supporters who responded with equal enthusiasm before taking his seat on the dais.

Later, in his speech the GJMM leadership stated though the GJMM did not impose the ‘daura suruwal,’ ‘chowbandi choli’ and ‘faria’ on anybody. “But, those who did not wear those would be identified as anti-Gorkhaland,” they said. It may be mentioned that the Lepcha's and Tamangs had sought to wear their own cultural dress, which Mr Gurung had granted. They were seen wearing their respective costumes today.

  • image Sudip Da, Apnei Kemon achhen, bhalo to? Before you should tell your children that Gorkhas are separatists I must tell you how I felt about Bengalese during my childhood. I shall never forget the way Bengali treated us during our stay in Bharatnagar (Siliguri). You must bear this that as I remember we (Gorkha children) were never allowed to enter in Bengalese home. After we played with their children they showered them to make them touchable. After giving us to sit in the verandah during marriage ceremony or pooja they purified the spots with cow dongs. We were never given in plates but in a banana leaf so that aluminum plate or spoon that we touched were not become untouchable and can be used by others. We were never allowed to go to well which was nearby of our own house but they filled our water buckets. It is amazing that dogs were no problem entering the house or well area. We were untouchable to them. I am the one who grew up in a Bengali village with so much sad feelings that I still remember every incidents vividly. And you write that you are afraid of your children would grow up hating Gorkhas for Dj breaking away from West Bengal. Remember Gandhiji, do you believe that British people still hate him for bringing independence to India. Why the film Gandhi broke the Box office record in UK then. It is pity that Bengali people were not being informed of the real situation in Dj. Likewise the British people did not know how the Indians being treated at their own homeland. I do not hate Bengalese for being from different race but I sympathize them for being so racist to Gorkhas. I remember another incident during our NCC training session at Kanchapara in Kolkata. Being first time in Kolkata we decided to visit the city. On one holiday me and some other student friends got up in a bus. Bus driver drove the bus off suddenly shaking all of us and one my friend accidently touched one old man’s foot. It was touch and was not intentional hit. The old fragile man immediately rose to his feet and started shouting “Aei pahadi chhele ama ke pau marechhe” swinging his right hand in the air. All surrounding people suddenly got up to their feet and gather around us started throwing punches and started shouting “maro, maro, maro”. Understanding the situation I beg them for mercy in Bengali and explained to them we were student from Siliguri please forgive us as it was merely an accidental touch and we would apologize to the old man. The old man was still showting in his furry. On hearing my plea in Bengali the other people slowly got back to their seats some of were them glaring at us. A well mannered gentleman asked us to offer apology to the old man one by one. We promptly followed his advice. This shows that Bengali people hate us from the core of their hearts. I could not forget the incident yet but I have no hatred against the Bengali people. It is their up bringing during their childhood makes them to act this way. The Bengalese in Dj are different. Some of them are my close friends. This is also true that to my knowledge I have never seen any Bengalese being treated unequally in Dj. I’m proud to say that we Djongs have admirable openness in comparison to all plain dwellers. Although we are treated differently in plain but you can come to Dj and find yourself that Dj people treat all races equally. Those Bengali children or any other children belonging to different races brought up in Dj are naturally different from those in plain. This proved when the dress code was applied to all Gorkhas in Dj. Many non-Gorkhas voluntarily wore it. Some of them were Bengalese too. They have learnt to become Dj people. Mentality of Dj people is exceptionally broader than of the plain. This is the one reason we have been dictated by Bengalese from the plain for so many years. I have suggestion for you Mr. Sudip that you must tell your children that those dying at Indian North, East and West frontiers are not Gorkhas. The whole regiment of 8 GR's perished during 1960 war with China were not Gorkhas. Those who followed Field Marshal Manikshaw (Sam) in the 1970's Indo-Pak war were not Gorkhas. Those guarding the remotest territories in Sichuan, Kashmir and Ladhak are not Gorkhas. You may tell them all Gorkhas are migrated from Nepal and the Dj and Siliguri were part of India before British came to India. You can also assured them that millions Bangladeshis who infiltrated Northern part of India with the help of Jyoti Basu are legitimate Indian citizens and we are not. You can explain to them that they the Bangladeshis have helped the WB government economically and financially where as Gorkhas are burden to WB. Creation of Dj was foresight vision of the plain dwellers and removing forest and planting of teas/sinkona around Dj hill areas were all done by people from plain. All the herbs, wild plants and Kamala Lebus that are being taken from Dj to Kolkata are actually from Maharashtra. You can tell them any story you like and you should try to hide yourself in mother of lies. You plain dwellers must come to Dj to see how people from different races harmoniously live here. We believe in “live and let live but not on live and let die”. I’m afraid that the CPM likes to follows the later.

  • image Yes Darjeeling is not industrially developed as it should have been. So is not Malda, so is not Murshidabad. So is not West Bengal as a whole. The new regime is trying to make a difference thats a good news but we always have mamata. But can it be a reason to breakaway?? I just ask you what is that we mean by saying we are in a Democracy. Dont you have elections in the hill? Dont you have someone talking about Hill problems in senate? I have a friend who has married a nepalese who was born in Darjeeling and educated in Jadavpur. I asked her if she faced any problem from the system during her studies and was she neglected in anyway. She could not think of any. Is there any one who is reading this newspaper can honestly say if he or she was denied admission in college or school because he or she is a gorkha or a nepalese or faced discrimination at work place, denied employment because of origin? I beleive it doesnt happen in India. Darjeeling is not under the rule of bengalis but Indians which include gorkhas. Separist policies lead to Assam which is now devoid of industry because of ULFA, leads to Pakistan who begs door to door to save their economy. What was problem with ULFA or Pakistan? Simply they didnt think of improving their condition by stepping up to the challenge they faced but instead chose to blame present system for their misery. Result was they continued to blame and continued to blame, took self defeating policies and ended up where they are now. My children will grow up thinking that it was gorkhas who divided bengal, hate gorkhas for what they have done and forget we are here to develop India as a whole. What are we heading to? For your other word yes gorkhas were looked down sometimes. But is it a way to gain respect by forming another state? Baichung Bhutia is a nepalese. Find a bengali who looks down upon him. There may be some idiots but too many fans to erase them. Bengal football fans loves Baichung. How could he gain so much respect. He is from the hills. He may have a nepalese decent (I am not sure). But he has lived up to the challenge and made a mark for himself. Did he require gorkhaland to do it for him? Ask yourself.....

  • image my friend sudipto.. u must be able to answer the fact that why is darjeeling not developed industrially as it is under the rule of west bengal and bengalis for more than sixty years...we have been deamnding the separate state vigorously only since mid eighties...till that time can you please point at least one new industry set up by the esteemed ministers of west bengal...whatever the industries the hills are having i.e tea tourism and timber were well established by the british...why we did not witness the upcoming of new industries in around 40 years till the eighties... the main problem my friend lies not in economic scenario BUT it is the big question of the identity of INDIAN NEPALESE....where ever we go we are always looked upon as foreigners....as a matter of fact i am an engineer working in a PSU but even it becomes difficult for me to convince my colleagues and workers that i am an indian but nepali....It is because of the indo nepal friendship treaty of 1950 as per which nepelese from nepal can live and work in india but cannot vote...but we ,who have born in india, voting for assembly and parliament and still serving india... are still unsure about our identity..this is the crux of the matter ....

  • image The silly issue of putting GL number plate was actually the idea of teh state govt. passed on to the GJMM by their agent implanted within the Morcha. As we can now see that even before the withdrawal of the GL no. plate , what it essentially did was it totally cut off Siliguri and Dooars from the so called proposed Gorkhaland ....because GL no. plates were not allowed to be put in these areas. Now what we must understand is that Gorkhaland will happen sonner or later....in 10 years or 15 years or sometime in the future inspite of the Hills having leaders who easily get sold . The govt. now has , with the idea of the GL number plate , and with the help of GJMM , totally removed Siliguri and Dooars from the future Gorkhaland.....???? why would the IG Tampta say that we could sport teh GL plates till Sukna and not beyond......and why would our leader...cold feet Bimal Gurung also say the same thing and he himself move around in WB or SK number plate vehicle while travelling outside darjeeling???? Bora ma haldai cha ...GJMM and its leaders le ....sending the Darjeeling hills back to the dark ages ....which is exactly what the bengal govt. wanted!!! And another thing is that "cold feet " Bimal Gurung is already the undeclared Chairman of DGHC and future Gorkhaland Autonomous Council!!! Why otherwise would sanctioning of donation to a registered society from DGHC fund need recomendation/ no objection of GJMM and Amar Lama and the other lawyer( Liar) in particular??? Why is all the council funds being used in contracts to BG and his goons?? Why even Nari morcha are offered Nali and Jhora contracts??? Is that for Gorkhaland??? Or GOJI- LAND!!! All eyewash.... Anyone who raises the gorkhaland cry gets a Ticket To Ride!!! Fare well La gorkhey bhais/ naris....gorkhaland is half way under the ground....did BG mention something about going underground???

  • image When the so called mukti party- GJMM comprising of Bimal Gurung and his hordes renewed the Gorkhaland andolan, they were actually saying Goji- land!!!! They have now filled their pockets and now suspends the Gorkhaland demand till the next tripartrite, which is when more crores will flow into their pockets, and they will give up the demand totally , very much like Madan Tamang has predicted!!! So gorkheys.....like I have been saying all along ....we have no real heroes....no true gorkhey leader is born yet!!! Anfu goji full....shut it , forget it , policy !!!! Heard Roshan Giri is buying Yuma Nursing home .....he must have made a lot in the bargain .....that is why he was made the Morcha secretary.....he is good at bargaining with the state about the amount ....he has been doing that from his AGSU days!!! And Bimal gurung presently own 27 vehicles!!! Paharay le aaru ke garos ....mabe he will get married a few more times!!! By the way...GJMM and Bimal Gurung will get a hefty cut from the electricty bills that the gorkheys will be paying shortly ....all at the same time !!! Jai GU- KHA!!!

  • image Dear Anup... do you know or even have the slightest idea of what you statement means by saying that the rule of westbengal we cannot accept. It is a democracy fo God's sake!!!! You are welcome in the parliament of not only Bengal but also in Delhi the capital of India. You can become the Prime Minister. Am I under the rule of Sikh because Manmohan Singh is the Prime Minister? Do you understand what a democracy is in the first place?? There are many representatives from Darjeeling in Bengal assembly. So you mean I will be under the rule of Gorkha if Bimal Gurung becomes Chief Minister of Westbengal?? If your answer is yes which is evident from letter do you still think that you are wise?? I took the example of Pakistan and Khalistan because they donot talk of Democracy. They are separatist in the first place and Gorkhland is seemingly not. But isnt the separaist ego that is driving this movement? Do you think that a small state of Gorkhaland will solve all problems and earn you a high self esteem. I would love to see Bimal Gurung sit in the assembly and lobby with the industrialist to bring industry to the Hills so that it doesnt stay only as a tourist place and brings wealth to the people of Darjeeling and west bengal as a whole. He may be even the Chief Minister if he can lead his party to a all india centric not gorkha centric. But he chooses the easy way. He will rather breakup the state and become chief minister rather than bringing Darjeeling to the industrial map. Though it will cause some people to die and bring some bad memories of hatred. Be proud in your gorkha dress anup but be an indian first and then a gorkha. Believe in democracy. I dont have a problem seeing Bimal Gurung as our chief minister or even prime minister as long as he brings prosperity and peace. But it is so easy to spread hatred than work towards prosperity. ..... your ignorant friend

  • image Dear sudipto, U should be clear that gorkhas are not demanding country outside india as the punjabis had done while demanding khalistan.so no comparison at all with the separatist groups that are hall bent on dividing india. We gorkhas consider ourselves as the true sons and daughters of mother india and we are sacrificing our lives for the country since ages..It seems u are ignorant of the facts.we are talking about the identity of indian nepalese and not of nepalese of nepal.Whatever may be the case our place that is the darjeeling hills are under the rule of west bengal government we we cannot accept.there is not an iota of thing that we can consider common between a bengali and nepali and this has a sad history of neglect and ridicule from the majortity of people living in plains mostly bengalis.one thing, hills will not starve if cheap bengali tourists from bengal stopped going to the hills.they are always searching for cheap hotels and cheap bengali eataries...they not at all affect the hill economy..I was there in the hills recently and no one forced me to wear the traditional dress. I wore it out of my own will and felt damn proud..

  • image I am surprised at the recent turn of events. So we need separate lands for all in India. First it was pakistan then khalistan and now gorkhaland. Wonderful.... Do you idiots see what happened to pakistan which stood of separation and religion based politics? A country reduced to a beggar and a failed state. Do you want to break India in thousand of pieces just to satisfy your ego? Gorkhas are proud member of Indian army. Every indian is proud of gorkhas. Now you want to divide it? Do you ever question what will you get from it? Go and ask Bimal Gurung what has he done to make Gorkha proud or Darjeeling proud other than being a dictator. But he seriously has done one thing. He has created a rift between neighbours Indian and Nepali who has lived in harmony for so long. Now Indian and Nepali will look upon each other in suspicion and hatred. Well may be bengalis stop going to the hills forever. Who wins?? Well some power hungry thug does. They gets a leader post for a separated gorkha land at the expense of innocent lives they have brainwashed. The main losers are you people who dances to the tune of dictators who play with sentiments. Let gurung bring industry to the hills rather than destroying of what is left. No he is too busy for power. So important he thinks of himself that he sends his subordinates to talk with CM and Buddhadev doesnt have a problem of talking to them himself. Stop the ego. Think of development. a Bengali admirer of gorkha
