Another tea garden abandoned by management

By DT Correspondent on May 08,2007

Darjeeling: Yet another tea garden is abandoned by its management in less than a week of time. This time it is Pooboong T. E., 17 km from Darjeeling and falling under Sukhiapokhari block. As is apparent, such incidents almost always, boil down to management - trade union misunderstandings. The CPI(M) affiliated CITU had been pressurising the management on various demands such as, ration cards, medical benefits, provident fund, etc. The CITU had supposedly called for a hunger-strike from today.

The GNLF affiliated Himalayan Plantation Workers Union (HPWU) on the other hand alleged that, CITU's tactics were not always entirely peaceful.

According to HPWU, CITU is guilty of intimidating and threatening the garden management. They also demanded an immediate arrest of errant CITU members.

The owner, Pawan Kumar Agrawal, the manager, Uttam Pradhan and the assistant manager left the garden suddenly and without prior information. A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the factory and it's 350 workers for now.

  • image It is very disheartining but in this situation proper steps and solution is to be sought and taken properly. First and foremost the reson for the management taking the harsh steps is to be scrutinised properly in deatils. If any other interset of the mangement is behined the said steps(selling, transfering the management) then the people (employee, labrour) should take proper steps and legal steps for their proptection and rights But if the managemnt has taken the said steps due to other factors, then the people (effected people)should discuss with the various organisation and groups and then take necessary steps for betterment and solution of the problem.

  • image Sad very sad............The reason Darjeeling is known all over is because of tea and to see tea gardens being shut or if working in a very sad state ............. makes one hurt. Beside tea and gardens I do not see other reason Darjeeling can be associated with. It is high time, that the government does something to get back its past glory and innocent smiling faces of the workers, before its too late.

  • image My grandfather Late Bhimbahadur Niraula (Mansi) took pain and had developed Poobong Tea Estate. Garden was a mother for every people. The owners and the people associated in the garden, should sit together and come to mutual agreement.Owner should act like guardian and the staffs should act in such a way that they should not revive the story of Goose and golden eggs.
