Action against tax defaulter

By DT Correspondent on March 21,2007

Darjeeling: Darjeeling Municipality authorities are determined to be harsh against tax defaulters. Municipality authorities today blocked the entrance of Fortune Resort Hotel (Central Hotel), Robertson Road, with their own household waste, citing non-payment of municipal tax by the hotel owner as the reason.

The civic authorities also disconnected water supply to the hotel and blocked its sewage system.

Mr Dinesh Gurung, conservation in-charge, Darjeeling municipality, said: “The waste materials used to block the entrance of the hotel belonged to the hotel itself. Since the hotel authorities have failed to pay municipal tax, we can not take responsibility of their wastage.”

“Similar action would be taken against all those defaulters who have failed to pay municipal taxes despite several reminders.” Said Mr. Gurung.

According to the municipality authorities, the Fortune Resort Central has not been paying municipal tax since 1998. “An amount of more than Rs 15 lakh is due with them,” they said.

Mr B M Subba, chairman of Darjeeling municipality, said: “Mr M B Agarwal, owner of Fortune Hotel, had been urged several times to pay his taxes, but to no avail. Today’s action was just the beginning of the drive against municipal tax defaulters. Similar action would be taken against other defaulters also.”

  • image Its rather sad that businessmen who have made pots of money from Darjeeling do not want to contribute a little for maintaining the civic amenities forget about contributing for other local causes . I would suggest even more harse measures if they show such intransigence. These people only want to exploit the local resources without giving anything back to society.

  • image Excellent news... finally the municipal authorities seem to have woken up from their slumber... I urge the municipality to not just collect overdue taxes... but also to increase the taxes for hotels and business establishments. Well done!!! we support Darjeeling municipality in their endeavor to see a clean and green Darjeeling.
