Salesian College, Sonada is one of the founding colleges of North Bengal University. It is a Catholic College owned by the Salesians of Don Bosco, a Multi National Educational Society managing over 3000 institutions of various types in 136 countries. Salesian College is one of the 25 Higher Education Institutions run by the Salesians of Don Bosco in India. Established in 1933 (Shillong), the college has a tradition of over 70 years of imparting quality education to the students from different parts of the country. The college provides Honours Degree Courses in three subjects namely, English, History and Education. The College also offers Career Orientation Programmes in four disciplines namely, Computer Application, Travel and Tourism, Communicative English, and Music. The college is known for its music department and is the only college in North Bengal University offering a three year course in Music as of now.
The Department of Travel and Tourism Management was initiated in Salesian College in the year 2005. The first batch of students are just completing their Advanced Diploma in the subject and are already availing of job placement in the industry.
Theme of the Seminar THE ROLE OF TOURISM INDUSTRY IN HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT IN DARJEELING HILLS Travel and Tourism Industry has grown over the years to become the largest Industry in today's world. The vast potential of this industry to generate employment makes it more labour intensive than capital intensive. In India, too, it is making headway as one of the rapidly growing sectors of the economy. Human resource could be termed as the backbone of this industry as it relies on manpower for its survival and growth. India with its huge human resource potential plays an important role in the expansion and maintenance of tourism as a global phenomenon.
This seminar is being organized at a critical juncture when Darjeeling's expansion potential is at its maximum. The region offers vast scope for diversifying tourism into its emerging trends like eco-tourism, community tourism, village tourism, heritage tourism, religious tourism, tea tourism, and adventure tourism. Investing in the infrastructure required for furthering these can bring in rich dividends in terms of revenue generation to help preserve the economic sustainability of the region.
This seminar is a humble attempt to explore the several avenues of employment and entrepreneurship in Travel and Tourism industry and expose the same to the students of the hill district.

Objective of the Seminar 1. To create awareness among the young college students of the employment opportunities in Tourism Industry.
2. To explore ways of enhancing the economic development of the people in the region through the promotion of Tourism Industry.
3. To promote entrepreneurship among the students by exposing various possibilities in Tourism Industry.
Call for Abstracts and Papers Interested academicians and scholars in the field are invited to present papers in the Seminar. Last date for submission of abstract, within 300 words computer typed and printed on A4 size paper with double spacing, is 30th June 2008. The chosen sub theme of the seminar should also be mentioned. The full text of the paper is to be submitted along with complete address of the contributor by 20th July 2008. Location Salesian College, Sonada is on the Siliguri-Darjeeling National Highway-55. It is about 16 kms before Darjeeling town and about 60 kms from Siliguri. It takes an hour and a half to reach Salesian College from Siliguri by taxi which is available at different points like N.J.P Railway Station, Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand and Bagdogra Airport.
Registration Registration will start from 3.30 pm on 2nd August 2008 at the Reception Counter. A Registration fee of Rs.100/- (One hundred only) per person is to be paid in cash at the time of Registration.
Accommodation Free accommodation will be provided to registered outstation participants on sharing basis.
Weather The normal monsoon weather is expected during the seminar period. Light woolen garments and an umbrella are recommended.
