SIKKIM UNIVERSITY

Press Release

A Summer workshop on Personality Development started at Sikkim University from the 11th June, 2009. This month long workshop has been organized in collaboration with the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

The participants to the workshop are students from the affiliated colleges of Sikkim University   and the post graduate students of Sikkim University.
The objective of the workshop is to develop the overall personality of the students.

Ms. Purnima Kharga, an eminent theatre personality from Mumbai is conducting the workshop.  A renowned kathak dancer, she has performed worldwide and has also conducted such workshops in Japan and Europe among university students.

This workshop forms part of the course of NSD popularly known as ‘Theater in Education.’

The workshop which begins every day at 9.00 am and concludes at 2 pm focuses on developing the personality of the students from 4 aspects of our daily life vis-a –vis, individual (self), family, education and society.

The first week of the workshop focused on the self and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th week will focus on family, education and society respectively.

The first week of the workshop, which dealt with the Self is over and the focus will now be on Family. The students are engaged both on the physical as well as the mental well being, these are done through physical and mental exercises.

The first hour of the day is devoted to physical exercise and yoga. Games are played and students are made sensitive to daily happenings in the surroundings.

The students are also made to make plots and act accordingly.  While sensitizing the students towards the pertinent issues of their daily lives, they are made to introspect.  Students are asked to make presentations of their perception of themselves through acting.

The last hour of the day is spent in some creative work. All the participants are made to write poems, essays and sometimes asked to tell stories.  This story telling is started by an individual and then the next student has to catch on to the thread and weave a story.

Conducted in a lively way, students are actively participating in all the exercises being done during the workshop.
The day ends with a slogan and homework.

  • image I understand very well that 'Pahade ruler' is not your real name................... anyway, congratulations for having guts and telling the truth. I am a bengali from Siliguri and I have also learnt about similar instances regarding recruitment in Sikkim University. In West Bengal, we are all too familier about educational politics, please don't repeat the same in Sikkim........ in Bengal, at least there are more choices, in Sikkim, you have only one proper Government University. In the website of Sikkim University, one finds their mission is trying to bring in the best practices of academic programmes, teaching methods and curriculum designs both from within and outside India. The University also reportedly plans to build infrastructure that is friendly to the fabulous and unparalleled environmental settings of Sikkim and the neighbouring regions. The webpage also states that from the very beginning the Sikkim University is trying to ensure that there is complete transparency, discreet individual accountability, targeted performance and no red-tapeism in this institution. If such thing is achieved, we all should be very proud. Since there is no Central University in North Bengal, every student of North bengal is looking forward to proper functioning of sikkim University. Our only request is, please select the best candidates (teachers/students/staffs). Don't be partial and don't favour the Sikkimese only. Remember, yours' is a CENTRAL UNIVERSITY.

  • image SU is central university and any Indian should get equal opportunity but things seems not ok.Few months ago there was recruitment for the various non teaching post and then phone calls from the kodey ministers started ..pressing them to recruit their candidate from their local area inspite of having inferior qualities..such is the situation in SU. people ministers doesnt understand the difference between Central University and Stater sponsored...it will take long time to change the mind set of this state.Schools are running by poor qualified teachers, hospitals:primary things in life is in sad story. Most of the people go to Kalimpong or Siliguri for check up..if not true please ask people in Jorthang,Singtam,Majhitar,Ranipool....1000 crore aucha sikkim ma but still no better than Darjeeling.CM sahab mathi mathi fly garda rahecha..muni muni ground ma rittai...If Darjeeling is going to be like Sikkim after Gorkhaland....I prefer it as it is.I urge expert to survey and throw more lights on Sikkims..various things would be revealed..negative things....We dont want Darjeeling to be like Sikkim.
