By DT Correspondent on February 16,2007

The 2007 February 14, which delivered the snow in Darjeeling since 19 February 1985, coinciding with Valentine Day. Darjeeling today woke up blanketed in six inches of stunning white snow. Tiger hill recorded as 10 inches of snow and Falut regions recorded more than 1 ft. Snowfall took everyone by surprise as the day before temperatures had been relatively high.

Snowfall began around 3 am, the snow flakes fell uninterrupted for over six hours, gathering more than six inches of snow by end of it. Darjeeling experienced the heaviest snowfall in February after many years. The entire Darjeeling hills remained cold as well, witnessed the incessant rain throughout the day.

The local residents and tourists were delighted, since 6 in the morning they were gathered in Chowrasta, scooping up balls of snow and throwing them at each other. At the same time, normal life of Darjeeling has been disrupted by heavy snowfall, electricity, telephones, mobiles were totally out of order. The most shops and offices were closed today. Minimum vehicles were on the streets with difficulties to ply on the snow. Roads linking to Darjeeling remained completely cut-off.

  • image "Heaven On Earth"...Today I am just taken back to the day after Snowfall. I was traveling and our vehicle got struck on the way to Simana. In fact, i was lucky to be stuck up there. Thanks to the local people out there. They helped us get our vehicle out of that thick snow on the road. The place and its ambience was spectacularly lit up by the snow. It was a pleasurable gift by Nature or God. It was heaven everywhere. I am missing Darjeeling from the bottom of my heart. I am badly looking forward to be a part of such lovely occasions ..Raj Bangalore.

  • image Snow fall is universal, and they are beautiful. However, for me as a Darjeelingey these snow falls of Darjeeling has a special meaning and emotional attachment. Not very long ago, I use to be a part of the beauty and excitement of those majestic mountains and friendly and smiling people of Darjeeling. To me, it seems like in order to ease the long lasting pain and sorrow of the people of Darjeeling Mother Nature blankets Darjeeling with purity of white show and environment of joy and happiness reminding us all that there is always hope and positivism in the air. May you all be always blessed by the gift of prosperity, peace, and happiness. Daniel R. California, USA
