The hills erupt again – this time in protest

By DT Correspondent on September 26,2007

Darjeeling: Reports have poured in from all over India regarding derogatory comments made by radio jockey Nitin working with Red FM 93.5 against the Nepalese community in India. According to one of the comments we received from Mr. Bishal Rai (made in DT) “He (Nitin) said : Aaaj Prashant Tamang 'Nepali larka from Darjeeling' has become Indian Idol 'with sarcastic laugh'….. and we have match tonight so we need to guard our house / malls / restaurants by ourselves as there will be no Nepali People to guard these place and whole night we need to say "Jagtay Raho". He also added that all the Footpath momo shops will remain closed as Nepali guy has become Indian Idol…”

We must make him / FM station apologize unconditionally in writing and verbally for this….

Call Nitin… 0120- 419- 35935 or
Email (Nitin's Boss)… anhita@myredfm.com and make them feel our presence..

We thank Mr. Rai for his alert observation and prompt action, as this has resulted in tremendous protest all over the Hills of Sikkim, Darjeeling and even Nepal.

Darjeeling was totally shut down today and massive rallies comprising of all political parties, school students and citizens are being organized all over the town. The effigies of Nitin and RED FM were burnt in town and nearby places like Jorebunglow, Ghoom, Kurseong etc.

Numerous protest calls have so far been registered by the Darjeeling DM office, Red FM and Darjeeling MP Dawa Narbula. Mr Tenzing Khambachey municipal commissioner, Darjeeling Municipality, said that we will ensure that Red FM is shut down and RJ Nitin comes to Darjeeling to apologize. He even said that “we will make sure the information and broadcasting ministry takes a strong note of this issue”.

We request all our readers and well wishers to thank Mr. Bishal Rai and protest to Red FM in the above given phone number and email address.

Correspondent, DT.

  • image Nitin/Jonathan Brady the I&B Ministry/ TDSAT and RED FM have all taken the Gorkhas for granted. Why else would it take them so long to come to a decision to BAN RED FM.? The I&B Minister very promptly to PLACATE said "WE ARE CONSIDERING banning Red FM for a week" TDSAT has turned around and said they will give RED FM 15 days to prepare their answer to the "Show cause notice" Such justice needs to be applauded...this is why all of us Gurkhas pay our taxes and help in the economy as well as shed our blood to protect our borders. Why these people are taking us for a ride is simple, they all believe that we Gorkhas are simple folks with no or low IQ therefore we do not see their crafty ways to sideline the issue. As far as I am concerned justice delayed is justice denied and by posting the hearing for the case to NOVEMBER 13 they are making sure people forget - since public memory IS short and the matter will die a natural death. Genesis Burson Marstella the PR agency representing RED FM is owned by the wife of a LEADING lawyer...now definitely the matter will be a LONG drawn affair...watch this space and therefore it explains the wishy washy so called apology statement issued that said sorry to all...while the RJ was specific in mentioning the Gorkhas when he was making an "innocous comment". IT is clear Gurkhas have to stand up for themselves. So long as we are in two minds and refer to ourselves as NEPALI please understand we will continue to be seen as FOREIGNERS. We therefore have to make a distinction and say we are Indian Gorkhas. Also we have to question the representatives from our own community - the Gurkhas - what are they doing for us...not just in Darjeeling and West Bengal what about Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh where Gurkha community is present in large numbers. We Gurkhas have to learn to fight for our dignity just as efficiently as we fight to protect India our motherland. We have to learn to respect our selves only then will others respect us. A huge representation of Gurkhas from all over India should assemble in Delhi since that seems to be the only place that the electronic and print media considers as NATIONAL to raise this issue. Anyone game for it?

  • image i am really pumped up with the efforts put in to personify the apt picture of Darjeeling we all thru generations are so familiar with...... and to be more critical I really liked the way we told people...we ain’t no dumdolls u mess with. But people its time to wake up and learn some lessons as well! as far as Nitin is concerned that cocky pest beleived in his logic due to what he himself is not becus who we are! lets beleive in ourselvess andmaintain our self esteem , not get violent on the streets...legal fight was a boon to this case and faith in our constitution! bringing peace and not harming harming people who dont deserve our bit of rage! But what really contributes to this kind of steriotype mentality some people feed on???? must be worked on. its time to do our homework as well, its time to work towards a positive generation and yeild an outcome more sensible with unity and spread awareness of the offensive Bows and Arrows we dodge in our day to day life! lets give it a thought!

  • image RJ Nitin- Real name Jonathan Brady used to work as a Security Assistant with KLM-NORTHWEST Airlines from Sep2000-OCt2001 at the Indira Gandhi Airport , how can call Gurkhas as Chowkidaar when he has work in the same capacity some years back. He used to be a standing guard for 2 hours whenevr KLM-Northwest Plane would land guarding the aircraft till it took off again, i know this cause he was my colleague and iam ashamed that I worked along with him. He was a loud mouth then and still continues to be, has not changed a bit, he was ridiculed many times at the office for this behaviour, sadly so far he has not matured. He thinks he is over smart and can po fun at anyone. I want him to be punished. Congrats Prashant for making India Proud!!!!

  • image We The proud Gurkhas should make them realize that we have been the bullet proof for every citizen of India, and India itself and people of India should respect this gift. Like British goverment has respected the true Gurkhas, Dont forget the second you remove your bullet proof the bullets around are waiting to peniterate your heart, so respect the true GURKHAS that makes your each day giving a damn about his life at the boarder just standing still to stop every bullet to peniterate and lets you breath independently and be secure each day i just want to say is RESPECT and you will be always RESPECTED this is what every human wants. So dont challange the Gurkhas its not the number its the true Gurkha heart that counts 1 against millions like prasant has proved even if its the singing battle or the battle field a Gurkha will never go back or never give up thats what makes the PRIDE of being a GURKHA and i m very proud to be born as a gurkha and proud to be called a Gurkha.

  • image Nitin,s comment on prashant's not only shows his lunatic state of mind but also shows that bcoz of these people ( like Nitin) we discriminate among us. NItin shouldn't have foregt that bcoz of these nepalese gurkha's , guards, )what ever ... these peoples from north india term...).. e sleep peace fully at night, we feel secure in our home, in our locality. As a radio Jockey Nitin should have thyought, that his derogataory comments can hurt million of people....Its because of such dumbhead people ..like him.. north eastern people find them selve secluded .. Nitin should render a public appology and that to be addressed Live on a television.. the letter written by Mr P RAI , is excellent and truly from heart. I can only request my brothers back at home in my butiful DAJ.. to keep the city undr control and keep their calm.. Next time onwards NITIN... kindly think before u speak...seriously man.. if u any how land in DArjeeling.. u will be masacared.. so keep away uorself from that part.. OTHER WISE...GOD SAVE U>..

  • image Copy of the letter marked to Anvita. I read about the racist remarks against the Nepalese community of India made by Nitin in connection with Prashant Tamang. It is deplorable that someone who regards himself as an educated Indian can pass such inciteful remarks. Why is he trying to alienate a community? He is undoing what films like "Chakde India" tried to do. What is shocking is that the management of Red FM 93.5 could allow this to happen. By keeping quiet on this issue it appears you promoted it. Before this snowballs out of control Red FM should take action and pacify the community that Nitin so heartlessly targeted. If Prashant Tamang has become the Indian idol....whatever one's opinion regarding this maybe, there is no reason to mock the Nepalese community. Maybe Nitin needs to meet my International mix of Year 3 kids to educate him on the importance of each job in our community and respect for man no matter what his standing in life is.

  • image Friends I am not connected with any channel nor do i have any serious personal favorites. However though the comment is in bad taste, I think the reaction is too harsh. For all you know it could be an unintentional, one-off aberration, please don’t be so harsh. RJ’ing is not particularly an easy job it often involves unscripted extempore talk. While an RJ needs to be extremely careful, in the huge volumes of such talk by RJ there can be slip-ups and we the listeners must display maturity and tolerance and be more forgiving. Are we always careful 24/7 in what we talk, aren’t humans prone to occasional errors? I am not condoning what he did. But can we be little more forgiving and tolerant and not let our passions be provoked at the slightest pretext? The question should be was it an inadvertent oversight or does he constantly insult a community with his prejudiced opinions? Action should be taken against him for the latter but not for the former. Nepali Gorkhas are a respectable community in India. since colonial times, their contribution to nation- building has been commendable and they deserve their rightful respectable place. However, they should not take out their grudge at the slightest pretext. If they agitate for such frivolous reasons it would look as a manifestation of their inferiority complex and wouldn’t further their cause much. Further mind you, the very fact that Nepalis are objecting to being called a chowkidaar shows the scant regard they themselves have for chowkidaars and do not accord dignity of labor to the profession. And for all of us Indians (our Ghurkha friends included), let's be a mature, balanced, optimistic, less cynical, less snobbish and above all a tolerant society, please!
