March for ‘Free Tibet’

By The Telegraph on March 17,2008

Kalimpong, March 17: About 2,000 Tibetans marched through the main streets of the town today as the outrage against the Chinese crackdown on the protests in Lhasa found its echo in the hills.

The marchers carried placards and shouted slogans against the Chinese government and in support of Tibetan independence. Cries of “Free Tibet” rent the air. Women protesters were seen weeping to mourn the deaths of their brethren back home.

“We will never give up until and unless Tibet is free. The Chinese must end their occupation of our homeland,” said Chumgdak, the president of the Kalimpong chapter of Tibetan Women’s Association.

Chumgdak added the world should come together to boycott the Beijing Olympics slated for August this year, especially since the Chinese aggression was there for all to see through international news channel.

A large number of women members in the crowd turned up in traditional Tibetan dress, while many youngsters wore bandanas carrying messages of freedom. Monks in their maroon robes were at the head of the procession.

“Tibetans from different parts of the region will gather in Siliguri tomorrow to march from Salugara to Court More. The Kalimpong contingent will be 100 strong,” Chumgdak said.

About 150 Tibetans had held a prayer service at Manilhakhang monastery here last evening for those killed in the latest round of protests in Lhasa. “We also said our prayers for world peace,” Chumgdak said.

Some marchers, however, seemed to suggest that passive protests alone would not be enough. “It is high time we abandoned the middle path of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and opt for drastic action,” said a marcher, Lobsang Dhendup, without elaborating.

Kalimpong used to be a hub of Indo-Tibetan trade till the Chinese aggression of 1962 put an end to it. The Tibetan presence is very strong in the town.

  • image I would say that the nepali gurkhas who think that they are the real natives of the Darjeeling Hills are not good enough hard workers because inspite of the fact that they are the 'OWNERS' of the Hills they could not make the most of their possession!! Let's look at the minority communities settled here in Darjeeling. Ofcourse, it includes the Tibetan refugees. These communities may have settled here for mostly about 50 - 60 years. Look at the progress they have made in these short span of time. They are what they are today because of their hardest labour. I don't mean that the Gurkhas did not work hard. They have! But, having spent ages by the nepalis (if I would believe some) in the Hills, they could not bring much improvement in their lifestyle. Well, it seems somewhere, something has awfully gone wrong as a result of which the Gurkhas could not make much headway. And, as fate would have it, my Gorkha brethren never tried to regain. So, it would be very much wise on the part of the commentators or (Tibetan bashers, I would say!) herein to find out the secret of success of these communities instead of shooting off their nasty mouth and flaunting their little knowledge about Buddhism and everything under the sun!! And, regarding the apprehension shown by AxomGurkha that the Gurkhas were dominated by the tibetan refugee community, I challenge him to prove it. Infact, it is the Tibetan community who is at the receiving end of the Gorkha wrath, whether they be guilty or not! And, AxiomGurkha you seem happy that the Tibetans are reminded of where they belong to. Let me emphatically say, my dear nitwit Axiomgurkha, if you are reminded of where YOU hail from then, I am sure you won't be happy with your existence!! And, lastly the name 'Darjeeling' has developed from the Tibetan word 'Dorjey-ling'. Please understand yourself, Axiomgurkha and the likes!! You guys seem good at reading between the lines!! And, please do not get into argument with me and reply to my comment with your 'superlatives' !!

  • image Thank u Himgir. Ke garne? Hamro jaati ma UNITY chaina. Tamang, Sherpas and Manange Gurungs try to identify themselves with Tibetans. In a way, it would be good if the Tibetans get Independence, that way the mysticism related to them will go away. Gorkhaland movement was good, at least they came to know where they belong to, otherwise a small community was trying to dominate us. They still do, thanks to the Indian govt according them ST status. I don't understand why the hell. Why can't the Govt. give ST status to all the refugees like Afghanis, Iraquis etc and let them rule over the Indians like the Tibetans are doing over us. They are plain REFUGEES and see what facilities they get. Kick them out and that will be a reality one day.

  • image Bahadur and Darjeeling ko Keta, I agree cent percent with both of u. They are ought and ought communal. In my time, some of them used to speak in Nepali among themselves, but now most of them knowing tibetan, they hardly speak nepali. They are misusing the hospitality accorded to them by us. Why were they not welcomed by Sikkim, bhutan and Arunachal with whom they have more similarities. Why the hell the GOI have accorded them ST status. BTW, darjeeling ko keta, during that mahakal fight, I'm sure the guy who was being beaten was a nepali, but we say we are brave gorkhas, tara sabai darcherua. No unity among ourselves. Kick these Tibetans out man.

  • image Hey Upendra man, a layman might be impressed by the rhetorics of quotes and acts but please not before this forum. Tara tapai le hami lai underestimate garee halno vhahechha tyasarth tapai lai pani euta quote with reference. The Chinese once wrote on a memorial below the Potala in Lhasa "If a people abandon military pursuits ... they are unable to safeguard their independent position". This was after the Gorkhas had made repeated plundering trips of Tibet and Tibet unable to defend itself had asked for the assistance of the Chinese which the Chineses gave. (A Re-discovered history of Gorkhas - Chandra B Khanduri pg no. 45). As for they being part of us and the arguments in favour of them hold no more water than a tea spoon. A closer look of Tibetans reveal their cowardliness, their communalism. If you my learned and neutral friend go through the pages of the Tibetan flight you'll see, it was the majority of the nobility which made across the Indian lines. The cream of Tibetan society ran away, leaving their unfortunate countrymen behind. Now they stand here on Chinese soles and shout for their country's freedom. That's cowardice my friend cowardice. And as far as my myopic vision has seen, I have seldom seen a Tibetan woman wearing a saree or a kurta. Further more I have seen very rare instances of Tibetans marrying outside of their kin. Bollocks ... And one step more I seldom see them speaking among themselves in Nepali. My learned and neutral friend perhaps you've not heard how high they speak of us Gorkhas. My learned and neutral freind please don't insult us by comparing us with the Tibbos. Did we shout slogans against the King of Nepal because he was killing innocent people in Kathmandu? Why didn't these refugees with Indian citizenship have a candle rally against the atrocities inflicted on another fellow human being that too of the mongoloid stock? They should have known then 'Talai Khane Baag Le Malai Panee Khancha' Man leave these caring of the Tibbos to the civilsed west. Let them have mirages of the Last Shangrila. Let them try to protect an exotic race who after a while might be found in some sanctuary in Tibet with Han Chinese as game wardens.

  • image Well, well, well, what do we have here, someones done his home-work in Indian Constitution. Sorry, I was never good at Political Science but I do remember a part from Pol.Sc. Freedom of Movement. If you are a citizen of India you could travel far and wide within the territories of India, no matter wherever you reside and work. Well, so Bihari, Kaiyas, etc are Indians so they have equal rights as we have. When my fello Darjeelin-gay said, draining the wealth from hills, well, I call it a money circulation within the country, do I have to remind that beyond these hills in the Southern direction is India too. We boast about Hills. What do we really have here or left here now. Just be practical and look around, what do you see? Congestion, landslide, tea garden in catious, buildings one top of the another, often in Govt. lands or noman's land. Do we really have anything left to be proud of?? If you are a refugee you have the whole hillside for you to construct the school building and other facilities which Indians hardly could imagine, "JOBS". We are better of being Refugees then the citizens. Like my brother says Citizenship ACT of 1955. I really do not understand the Constitution but I do feel that these Constitution should be rewritten. I have seen poor families in Kolkotta living in Island traffic, can you imagine the poverty and the state of fellow citizen whereas refugees have better status. What is wrong with our Constitution, they are India citizens for Dalai Lama shake, can someone help us! At the same time local people in Delhi, Pune, etc do not comment by saying Hill people have come for our jobs in Call Centres. ARe we not draining their wealths then?? Ofcourse not its in reverse! What do we really have to contribute! Tea, cincona, Can anyone strike a deal with foreign investing companies for better tea gardens and business, do we have a capacity?? anything else for the contribution? I cannot think of anymore oh I know Tourism, scinearies of Ugly, hideous looking buildings all around. Can we really see our Mighty Mt. Kanchanjunga from a place where you could view 15 years ago? I really salute our Bengali Tourist, fello citizen who despite of our ill-treatment, little or no respect still come to visit our messed up Hill. Sometimes I wonder if they come to see our mess or our the nature, cause I don't think we have any left for anyone to see, definetly not in another 10 years time if we still carry on living like this. Our building emerges from side, top, bottom of the hills as if they grew overnight like mushrooms. Honestly, do we really care????? And to my fella Tibs if you think you are a citizen of India after all these years living in India or born in India, why do we care about the place(Tibet) where you will not be going back to live, what is the fuss about?? This is your home, my home and Indian's home. I could sit here and write all night long but would not change a thing, I know!

  • image I am a great fan of the Dalai Lama and have had the opportunity to have an audience with His Holiness as well, being blesses several times. He's up there, above mankind... a spiritual guru bogged down by daily politics and present day situations. Perhaps that's one of the reasons he said that there would be no further Dalai Lama incarnates in one of Larry King's interviews. The Dalai Lama has no further role to play in today's society... Getting back to Darjeeling. We all have Tibetan "Bhotey" friends, grew up together and eat and drink and play together. So why are they still different than us Pareys / Gorkheys? Do you believe when I say that Mahakal is a sort of Tib Ghetto? Not as in poverty but in matters of arms and weapons, its loaded people. These guys can be extremely communal as seen in one of the Losar fights in Purple Discotheque way back in 2003/4. One guy was beaten badly by all the Tibs who grouped together even though they had nothing to do with the person being beaten. Just because there was a Tib brother fighting they had to hit him, with bottles, fists, chairs whatever they could lay their hands on. That night I am sure no one slept in the Mahakal building. As we were going home that way that night we could see guys hanging around the Mahakal area with the iron gate locked.... So what does this prove? You tell me. And by the way, if you hate China so much why do sell Chinese goods? You go to the extent of black listing local Pareys from getting supplies from Pashupati... ask our local shop owners from Fancy market, they will tell you.... TinTin watch out bro, Tibet rising can mean so many things for all of us... Integrating into the local community is vital for u

  • image Hey Upendra, ekdamai maja ayena with your views and points. Why so passionate about them (Tibetans) when all they do to us is "kick around". They are out and out communal. Very few Tibetans get along well with the Gorkhas in Darjeeling. In such cases, u will invariably find that either their mothers are gorkhas or wives would be gorkhas. Concentrate on Gorkhaland man. Concentrate on Gorkhaland. Tibet is never going to be independent and that's sad. Just to add on, I'm half tibetan hai - my mother is a tibetan.
