Poll: 4th Tripartite Meeting
During the 4th Tripartite Talk, GJMM has been immensely pressurized to focus only on the creation of Gorkhaland, besides, the conclusion of the Meeting seems to be only TALK on POLITICAL LEVEL in next round. Do you think 4th Tripartite Talk has been successful?

Gorkhas have the right to ask for a separate state

By Reader's Feedback on June 27,2008

First of all, I am Bengali and not one of those self-hating types either. I am quite aware of all the positive contributions of Bengalis to India and the world.

However having said that, I would like to respond to concerns about Bengalis losing land. Just because we have lost land to the Muslims, does not mean we oppress others. Darjeeling et all have never been Bengali land. They have always belonged to the Gorkhas. They are merely part of West Bengal for administrative purposes. If we cannot look after them well, they perfectly have the right to ask for a separate state.

I would like to ask my fellow Bengalis where all this rage was when Muslims were killing and driving out Bengalis during Partition or where all this rage is when the Communist government encourages illegal settlers from the other side to come over and demographics of entire districts of WB are changing. It is always easy to oppress the weak, true courage comes from standing up to someone as big as you.

  • image Mr Biswas, I really appreciate the way you have been able to place yourself within the prevailing rigmarole in Darjeeling and the dastardly act that took place in Siliguri. Your opinion reveals your true objective view and what a statesman should possess in terms of empathy that one group of countrymen should harbor for another. Darjeeling will certainly prove to be more patriotic and serve the country with it's sweat and blood if only the respect that the gorkhas deserve is bestowed on them.

  • image Mr Pradipto, thanks for taking this bold step which i am sure is motivating and encouraging enough for the other real and broadminded Begali brothers. Because we all know its not the real Bengali that are against the overall development of not just the Gorkhas but all the community through the formation of the seperate state Gorkhaland, but its the left Government and the illigal settlers thats giving bad name to the well cultured Begali people.

  • image Dear Pradipto, Thank you very much for your sympathy to our cause. It has surely taken a lot of courage to say so and is an expression of the broadmindedness that living in the US has brought about in you. Sadly, I cannot say the same about your brethren living in Bengal since either fear of the Communist hegemony or pure Bengali parochialism seems to be preventing the majority here of expressing similar views. I have always asked myself what the average Bengali citizen will lose by letting go of Darjeeling and I am always baffled as the answer seems to be 'NOTHING'. Yet, their opposition to our cause persists for no sensible or apparent reason except the perrenially stubborn chant of not allowing Bengal to be divided. So, comments such as you have posted are cherished by all Gorkhas. Thank you again.

  • image Dear Mr. Pradipto, it is nice to hear from you that the real history of gorkhas of darjeeling. There r many bengali brothers n sisters who are also in support of separate state where not only gorkhas r living but there r other communities too who r equally in support of gorkhaland. As you have right said that govt. of west bengal should concentrate for upliftman of poor people of bengal origin instead of migrated bengali from bangladesh who r help by politician for vote bank. now these people r more active and trying to rule the bengal.
