Manufacture Japanese style handmade paper from a non tree shrub, the species of Daphne know as Argalee (local name) or Lokta (in Nepal).

This indigenous hemp shrub grows at an altitude between 2000  to 3000 meters in the Himalayan Regions. The soft bark of fast growing shrub is matured in every 4/5 years for harvesting.  Usually villagers use this to make strong ropes. Only matured stems are used, thus preserving the eco system.

The bark is cleaned and boiled to make the paper pulp. Hand made paper is made by ancient technique using wooden receptacle, wooden frames and bamboo screens for hand shifting the pulp. The wet sheets are then dried in air or in the sun. Even though partly automated, this process is time consuming but very creative and unique.

Our experience and innovative workers make exceptionally beautiful and distinctive sheets of paper of vibrant colours.  They are finely textured, strong and have inherent natural resistance to insects. The dyed hemp paper is thick like bark yet has a pleasing smooth surface. Other varieties include wrinkled, batik, deckle edged, floral with specific pattern, etc. Our paper craft includes lampshades, bags, writing pads, envelopes, notebooks, files, greeting cards, wedding cards etc. We also take order for specific types of paper. This eco friendly items make excellent souvenir of Kalimpong.

  • image The information on handmade paper is very intertesting and informative. However, pls. note that Lokta and Argellee are not the same. Lokta shrub are found in a higher altitude than Argellee and is more expensive and sought after paper than argellee. Lokta takes the colours more eaisly where as the Argellee tends to blot. Pls. check the information and correct it.
