Dear Readers,
Time seems to be flying faster than expected. Before we realize, we are already lagging behind schedule. Perhaps this is the way of life here in Darjeeling - Self centredness, Hooliganism, Incompetence at work, lack of social unity and civic sense –pushes us far behind and alienates us from the rest of the world, the glorious Queen of hills of one time, Darjeeling.
Who is to blame for the state of current Darjeeling? Why are we living pathetic lives? What are the solutions? Is it a result of some conspiracy or is it due to our ignorance? The citizens of the hills, at this juncture, are faced with a formidable test of serious introspection.
It is human nature to ignore and take for granted what one possesses, the value of which is ralised only when one loses it forever, as the case with Late Madan Tamang goes… he was, probably the only leader who embodied the true spirit and temperament of Darjeeling. I clearly remember his words during his first interview with DT: “Let me have a mandate, I can sort out a perennial water problem of Darjeeling within one year, do we bring water from Siliguri!! Water is right here, around us, within our own periphery”. He always warned against being hypothetical and framing hypothetical questions, but he had a deep understanding of the power of the Media.
On May 21 and 22, we witnessed an over whelming amount of Hits on our website, there were over 6 lakh plus hits in a day, which was next to the Hits we received during Indian Idol III (Prashant Tamang). Numerous articles on Madan Tamang flooded the DT office which clearly signifies his strength as a true Gorkha Leader. In this edition of DT we have endeavoured to present Madan Tamang from different dimensions as our Cover Story.
Further, we are deeply bereaved due to the sudden demise of our publisher, Dr. Biswas Pradhan, as a result of which we are late in this issue.
Lastly, Heartfelt gratitude to all our readers for your response, support and your concern towards our hill town. As always, we expect your opinions and suggestions.
With warm regards
Udhyan Rai
